July Is Dry Eye Awareness Month: What Eastside Residents Near Bellevue Should Know About Getting Real Relief

There is a symptom so common that most people have stopped mentioning it to their eye doctor.
It shows up as a gritty, scratchy sensation in the morning. Eyes that water at the worst moments - driving into the sun, sitting in an air-conditioned office, staring at a screen. A heavy, tired feeling that no amount of rest seems to fix. And a cabinet full of eye drops that help for about twenty minutes before everything returns to exactly how it was.
If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. More than 49 million Americans suffer from dry eye disease - and the majority of them are managing symptoms rather than treating the actual cause.
July is Dry Eye Awareness Month. At C U Tomorrow Eye Care, it is one of the conditions we think about most - because dry eye is widely undertreated, frequently misunderstood, and, for most patients, genuinely fixable.
What Dry Eye Actually Is
Dry eye disease is not simply "not enough tears." The tear film is a complex, layered structure, and when any part of it breaks down, the whole system fails.
The outer layer of the tear film is an oil layer produced by glands along the edge of your eyelids called meibomian glands. These glands are responsible for preventing your tears from evaporating too quickly. When they become blocked or inflamed - a condition called meibomian gland dysfunction - the oil layer thins, tears evaporate in seconds, and the cycle of irritation begins.
This is the most common driver of dry eye disease, and it is almost entirely invisible in a standard eye exam. Most eye exams check whether you are making enough tears. They do not check whether your tear film is stable - or why it is not.
For patients throughout Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, and the surrounding Eastside communities, this distinction matters enormously.
Tech workers spending 10+ hours at screens every day blink far less than their eyes need. The Pacific Northwest's seasonal shifts - dry indoor heat in winter, high AC exposure in summer, allergen-heavy springs - compound the problem. Many patients have had dry eyes for years before anyone identified the actual cause.
Why Drops Are Not Enough
Artificial tears are the first thing most people try, and the first thing most doctors recommend. They provide temporary lubrication and immediate comfort - and for mild cases, that may be sufficient.
But for patients with meibomian gland dysfunction, artificial tears are treating the symptom, not the problem. The glands are not being unblocked. The inflammation is not being addressed. The instability in the tear film is not being resolved. So the drops wear off, the discomfort returns, and the underlying condition continues to worsen.
The longer meibomian gland dysfunction goes untreated, the more gland tissue can be permanently lost - which is why earlier intervention consistently produces better outcomes.
OptiLIGHT®: The Treatment That Goes to the Source
At C U Tomorrow Eye Care, not only can we address dry eyes via medication, but we also offer OptiLIGHT® byLumenis - the first and only light-based dry eye treatment FDA-cleared specifically for dry eye disease due to meibomian gland dysfunction.
OptiLIGHT uses Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) delivered in precise, controlled pulses to the skin just below the lower eyelid. This light energy:
Reduces the inflammation that destabilizes tear film Closes the abnormal blood vessels that contribute to eyelid inflammation (as seen in Rosacea patients)
Stimulates the meibomian glands to begin producing healthier oil
Each treatment takes about 15 minutes and requires no downtime. Most patients complete a series of four sessions, and many begin noticing improvement after the first or second treatment.
In clinical studies, OptiLIGHT produced statistically significant improvements in dry eye symptoms, tear film stability, and meibomian gland function compared to control groups.
It is one of the most meaningful advances in dry eye care in years - and it is available right here on the Eastside.
Symptoms Worth Taking Seriously
Dry eye disease does not always feel like dry eyes. Many patients with significant meibomian gland dysfunction experience:
Eyes that water excessively, especially in wind or cold air
A gritty, foreign-body sensation that comes and goes
Blurred vision that clears temporarily when blinking
Eye fatigue or heaviness, particularly in the afternoon
Redness, especially along the eyelid margins
Sensitivity to light or screens that seems to worsen over time
Contact lens discomfort or intolerance
If you have been told your eyes look "normal" at previous exams but you continue to experience these symptoms, it is worth asking whether a more thorough dry eye evaluation - including meibomian gland imaging - has ever been done.
Summer: When Dry Eye Gets Worse
For many patients, July is when dry eye symptoms peak. The reasons are specific to how most people on the Eastside spend summer:
More time outdoors in wind, sun, and allergens. More time in air-conditioned cars, offices, and homes -AC strips humidity from the air faster than any other season. More screen time for children - summer school break means more device uses not fewer.. Each of these is a known trigger for dry eye flares.
This is also why summer is actually the best time to get evaluated and begin treatment, whether it is through prescriptions specified for you or by use of more advanced technology such as IPL.Starting OptiLIGHT now means you can complete a treatment series and head into fall - back-to-school season, increased screen time, and more indoor air exposure - with a functional, stable tear film.
A Note on Other Dry Eye Treatments
OptiLIGHT is one tool in a broader dry eye treatment toolkit. Depending on your specific presentation, we may also recommend:
In-office meibomian gland expression - manual clearing of blocked glands, often paired with IPL for optimal results.
Prescription anti-inflammatory medications (drops or pills) - for patients with a significant inflammatory component such as Rosacea.
Customized at-home regimens - warm compress protocols, lid hygiene routines, and use ofsupplements structured to your specific gland function.
Scleral contact lenses - for patients with severe dry eye affecting visual quality significantly, or making them soft contact lens intolerant
At C U Tomorrow Eye Care, we do not apply a one-size protocol. We use meibomian gland imaging (meibography) and functional tear analysis to understand exactly what is happening with your specific glands - then we build a treatment plan around that data.
If You Are Thinking About Ocular Surgeries such as Cataract or Refractive Surgery
One more thing worth noting during Dry Eye Awareness Month: if you are planning on any eye surgeries like cataract surgery, Lasik/PRK,or Refractive Lens Exchange, addressing dry eye first is not optional - it is important for achieving better results.
Dry eye disease affects the accuracy of the measurements used to select your intraocular lens implant. Unstable tear film on the day of pre-surgical testing can shift those measurements enough to affect your outcome. An untreated dry eye significantly slows post-operative healing. The same is true with any refractive surgery - the healthier ocular surface, the more successful surgery.
We offer comprehensive dry eye evaluation as part of pre-surgical co-management for patients planning cataract procedures. Getting your dry eye treated first is one of the most protective things you can do for your surgical outcome.
You Do Not Have to Keep Managing This
Dry eye disease has a reputation for being something you just learn to live with. That reputation is outdated.
For most patients, the right combination of in-office treatment and at-home care produces meaningful, lasting relief - not just temporary comfort. The key is finding the actual cause and addressing it directly, rather than reaching for drops every time the discomfort returns.
C U Tomorrow Eye Care is here for patients throughout Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Sammamish, Issaquah, and the greater Eastside. This July, in honor of Dry Eye Awareness Month, we invite you to stop managing and start treating.
